Can Dogs Catch Colds? What a Runny Nose or Cough Really Means

Dogs can develop respiratory illnesses that look very much like a human cold, but they generally do not catch the ordinary common cold from their owners. The viruses responsible for typical human colds usually differ from the infectious agents that cause coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge in dogs.

That distinction matters because calling every canine cough or runny nose a “cold” can hide more useful possibilities. Similar symptoms can occur with canine infectious respiratory disease, commonly called kennel cough, canine influenza, airway irritation, pneumonia, and several noninfectious conditions.

Your Cold and Your Dog’s “Cold” Are Usually Different Illnesses

Human common colds can be caused by many respiratory viruses, with rhinoviruses among the most familiar examples. Dogs also develop upper respiratory infections, but the pathogens circulating in dogs are generally different and adapted to canine hosts.

As a result, the risk that your dog will catch an ordinary cold directly from you is considered extremely low. Likewise, the typical respiratory infections circulating among dogs are generally not the same illnesses people call the common cold.

Dogs Get Cold-Like Symptoms From Several Different Causes

There is not one universally defined canine equivalent of the human “common cold.” Instead, several infectious organisms can affect a dog’s respiratory tract and produce overlapping signs.

Canine infectious respiratory disease may involve more than one organism. Merck lists pathogens associated with kennel cough that include Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus type 2, and canine influenza virus. Multiple infections can occur at the same time.

This explains why two dogs with apparently similar “cold” symptoms may not have exactly the same disease.

What Cold-Like Symptoms Look Like in Dogs

Canine respiratory illness can produce symptoms that seem familiar to anyone who has had a respiratory infection.

  • coughing;
  • sneezing;
  • nasal discharge or a runny nose;
  • eye discharge;
  • reduced energy;
  • fever in some infections;
  • reduced appetite;
  • changes in normal activity.

The CDC identifies coughing, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, and reduced appetite among signs of canine influenza. The severity ranges from dogs showing no obvious illness to severe respiratory disease with pneumonia.

These symptoms are useful warning signs, but they do not establish a diagnosis. Coughing and sneezing are nonspecific and can occur with several infectious and noninfectious respiratory conditions.

A Harsh, Dry Cough May Point Toward Kennel Cough

One of the most recognizable canine respiratory syndromes is infectious tracheobronchitis, widely known as kennel cough.

Merck describes its classic feature as a harsh, dry cough that can occur in spasms and may be followed by gagging or retching. Although commonly associated with kennels, transmission is not limited to boarding facilities. Any environment where dogs have relatively close contact can increase exposure opportunities.

Common higher-exposure environments include:

  • boarding facilities;
  • dog daycare;
  • animal shelters;
  • grooming facilities;
  • dog parks;
  • training classes;
  • other settings where many dogs share airspace or equipment.

Many uncomplicated cases are mild, but puppies, older dogs, and dogs that are already debilitated can develop more serious complications such as bronchopneumonia.

Dog Flu Is Real, but It Is Not the Same as Human Seasonal Flu

Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza A viruses adapted to dogs. Current CDC information identifies canine influenza A(H3N2) as the strain presently associated with dog flu. The previously recognized H3N8 canine influenza virus has not been reported since 2016 and does not appear to be actively circulating.

Canine H3N2 is different from the seasonal H3N2 influenza virus that circulates among people.

Dog flu can spread through respiratory droplets produced when infected dogs cough or sneeze and through contaminated objects or surfaces. Close-contact environments such as kennels and shelters can facilitate transmission.

Most infected dogs develop relatively mild respiratory illness, but pneumonia and secondary bacterial infection can occur. CDC states that most dogs recover from canine influenza within approximately two to three weeks.

Can You Catch Dog Flu From Your Dog?

Current evidence is reassuring. The CDC reports no evidence that canine influenza viruses have spread from dogs to people and no reported human infections with canine influenza virus anywhere in the world. The agency currently considers canine influenza a low threat to people.

That does not mean every disease carried by dogs is incapable of infecting people. Dogs can carry other zoonotic pathogens. It means canine influenza specifically has not been shown to spread to humans under current evidence.

There Is One Important Exception to the “Your Cold Won’t Infect Your Dog” Rule

If someone has respiratory symptoms, it is not always possible to know from symptoms alone whether they have an ordinary cold, influenza, COVID-19, or another infection.

COVID-19 deserves separate consideration. CDC guidance states that SARS-CoV-2 can spread from people to animals during close contact, and dogs and cats have been infected, usually after exposure to people with COVID-19. Serious illness in pets is considered extremely rare, and the risk of pets spreading COVID-19 to people is low.

If you have suspected or confirmed COVID-19, CDC recommends reducing close contact with pets while you are ill, including activities such as kissing, snuggling, sharing food, or sleeping together.

This is different from saying that an ordinary human cold routinely spreads to dogs. It does not.

How Dogs Catch Respiratory Infections From Other Dogs

For most canine respiratory diseases, other dogs are a more relevant source of exposure than humans.

Transmission can occur through:

  • respiratory droplets released during coughing and sneezing;
  • close nose-to-nose contact;
  • shared bowls;
  • shared toys or equipment;
  • contaminated surfaces;
  • human hands or clothing that have contacted respiratory secretions.

CDC notes that dog flu spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, while Merck describes rapid transmission of infectious tracheobronchitis among susceptible dogs kept in close confinement.

If Your Dog Starts Coughing, Consider Where It Has Been

Exposure history can be as useful as the symptom itself.

Think back over the previous days and ask whether the dog has recently:

  • stayed at a boarding facility;
  • attended daycare;
  • visited a dog park;
  • been groomed;
  • participated in training or dog sports;
  • spent time in an animal shelter;
  • been around another coughing or sneezing dog;
  • shared bowls, toys, or equipment with unfamiliar dogs.

For kennel cough, Merck notes that the characteristic cough can develop approximately 5 to 10 days after exposure to susceptible or affected dogs.

Canine influenza generally has a shorter incubation period, with Merck describing signs developing about two to four days after exposure.

Not Every Cough Is an Infection

One reason not to diagnose a “dog cold” at home is that coughing has many possible causes.

Respiratory irritation can occur after exposure to smoke or chemical fumes. Chronic airway disease can also produce coughing, while abnormalities involving the trachea, heart, lungs, or upper airway can mimic infectious respiratory disease.

Sneezing is similarly nonspecific. Merck notes that it can occur with infectious and inflammatory disease as well as tumors, congenital abnormalities, foreign material in the nasal passages, and other disorders.

Therefore, a dog repeatedly sneezing or coughing is not automatically experiencing a harmless viral infection.

When Mild Symptoms Need More Attention

A dog with a mild respiratory illness may remain relatively bright and continue eating and drinking. More concerning signs suggest that the problem may be more severe than an uncomplicated upper respiratory infection.

Contact a veterinarian when respiratory symptoms are accompanied by:

  • marked lethargy;
  • reduced or absent appetite;
  • fever;
  • thick or pus-like nasal discharge;
  • a worsening or persistent cough;
  • rapid deterioration;
  • significant weakness;
  • other major changes from normal behavior.

Difficulty Breathing Is Not a “Wait and See” Symptom

Cold-like signs and respiratory distress should not be treated as the same thing.

Coughing or sneezing can occur with relatively mild disease. Labored breathing, however, can indicate a serious airway or lung problem requiring prompt veterinary care.

Watch for:

  • obvious effort while breathing;
  • rapid breathing while resting;
  • abdominal muscles working strongly with each breath;
  • an unusual extended-head or neck posture;
  • blue or purple discoloration of the gums or tongue;

Do Not Give Human Cold Medicine to a Dog

A dog coughing or sneezing should not automatically receive medication from the human medicine cabinet.

Cold and flu products can contain combinations of pain relievers, decongestants, cough medicines, stimulants, sweeteners, or other active ingredients. The safety and dose of these substances cannot be assumed from their use in people.

Treatment should depend on the actual cause. An uncomplicated kennel-cough case may require little more than supportive management, while pneumonia, airway disease, influenza, or another diagnosis may need an entirely different approach. Merck notes that antibiotics are usually unnecessary in uncomplicated kennel cough and are generally reserved for situations where bacterial complications such as pneumonia are present.

Keep a Coughing Dog Away From Other Dogs

If your dog develops signs of contagious respiratory disease, temporarily removing it from group-dog environments helps protect other animals while the cause is being evaluated.

CDC recommends that dogs coughing or showing other respiratory signs not be exposed to other dogs or cats. It also recommends cleaning hands, clothing, equipment, and surfaces after exposure to dogs with respiratory disease.

That means postponing activities such as:

  • daycare;
  • boarding;
  • dog parks;
  • group training;
  • shared water stations;
  • unnecessary close contact with other dogs.

If you need to visit a veterinary clinic, tell the clinic that your dog is coughing before entering the waiting room so staff can reduce exposure to other patients.

Vaccines Can Reduce Risk From Some Respiratory Diseases

There is no single vaccine against everything owners might describe as a “dog cold” because several pathogens and noninfectious causes can produce cold-like symptoms.

Vaccines are available against some important canine respiratory pathogens. Merck lists vaccines targeting organisms associated with kennel cough, including canine parainfluenza, canine adenovirus type 2, and Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Vaccination against canine influenza A(H3N2) is also available in the United States. CDC recommends discussing vaccination with a veterinarian because the value of non-core respiratory vaccines depends largely on the dog’s exposure risk and lifestyle.

A dog that rarely interacts with unfamiliar dogs has a different exposure profile from one that regularly attends daycare, boarding, shows, training classes, or other high-contact environments.

Mild respiratory infections can resolve with supportive care, but cold-like symptoms can also represent kennel cough, canine influenza, pneumonia, or a noninfectious respiratory disorder. If symptoms worsen, appetite drops, fever or marked lethargy develops, or breathing becomes difficult, veterinary assessment matters more than deciding whether to call the illness a cold.
